MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said the number of new registered voters for next year’s midterm elections may exceed its 3 million target.

This came as the total number of voter applicants reached a total of 1,174,375 as of March 12, according to the poll body’s latest data.

“It appears that our projection of 3 million will be exceeded, especially with Sept. 30 still far off. It looks like we will exceed and reach probably 3.4 (million) to 3.5 million,” poll body chair George Erwin Garcia said in an interview.

Voter registration activities for the 2025 midterm polls kicked off on Feb. 12.

“We are only a month into the voter registration period and yet we have over a million registering,” Garcia said.

Calabarzon (Region 4-A) still has the most number of applicants with 213,757, followed by the National Capital Region with 174,954.

So far, the lowest number of registrants are recorded in the Cordillera Administrative Region with 12,641.

The nationwide voter registration will end on Sept. 30. (PNA)
