MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) ramped up security and disaster response operations in Albay after ashfall from Mayon Volcano raised concerns over public safety.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the Police Regional Office in Bicol Region (PRO-5) deployed personnel to secure affected communities and support evacuation efforts.

“We have mobilized (a) sufficient number of personnel and resources to assist in the conduct of disaster response protocols and ensure maximum visibility in affected communities. We will be sending more once needed,” Nartatez said in a statement on Sunday.

Preemptive evacuations, especially in areas within the danger zone, were conducted in line with the instruction of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to look after affected residents.

Local government units (LGUs) are also on heightened alert due to health risks of the ashfall and the possibility of further eruptions.

Police units distributed face masks and issued an advisory to limit outdoor exposure.

“We are coordinating closely with local government units and disaster response agencies to provide timely and efficient support on the ground. The PNP has instructed commanders to prioritize public safety, enforce restricted zones, and remain on heightened alert while Mayon’s activity persists,” Nartatez said.

The PNP is strictly implementing a no-entry zone within the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.

The PRO-5 likewise dispatched traffic enforcers along key roads, ensuring unhampered movement for emergency response. (PNA)
