(Relaxnews) – If you suffer from vertigo or dizziness, a new US study finds that YouTube could help you find a cure.
Researchers at the University of Michigan found that YouTube videos teaching a maneuver to cure a type of vertigo was often as helpful and accurate as visiting a doctor.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a relatively common inner ear disorder that causes dizziness due to free-floating calcium particles trapped in the inner ear. To cure it, many sufferers have relied on a technique called the Epley maneuver in which the patient rolls his or her head and body while laying down.
In a study involving the review of some 3,000 YouTube videos on relieving vertigo, with 33 devoted to the Epley maneuver, the doctors found that 64 percent taught the move correctly and could be useful for those with the problem.
The study was published on July 24 in the journal Neurology.
