MANILA – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) – Port of Subic has seized PHP162.2 million worth of marijuana, also known as “kush,” following an inspection and search of a distressed sailing yacht at the Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) on Wednesday night.
In a news release Thursday, the Bureau reported that the 98.33 kilograms of marijuana was discovered following a tip from mechanics that the vessel might be carrying prohibited or contraband items, prompting authorities to conduct an inspection.
The vessel, manned by Thai and Malaysian crew members, was compelled to seek emergency shelter and repairs at the SBYC after sailing from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, and originally bound for Taiwan.
Acting on the information, BOC-Port of Subic District Collector Geniefelle Lagmay issued a Mission Order authorizing the inspection and search of the sailing yacht, where they discovered the kush.
“This successful operation is a clear manifestation of the Bureau of Customs’ commitment to Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno’s marching order to protect our borders at all times. We acted immediately upon receipt of the information, and through the swift coordination and vigilance of our personnel and partner agencies, we were able to prevent a significant quantity of dangerous drugs from entering our communities,” she said.
“The Port of Subic will remain vigilant and resolute in carrying out its mandate to secure our borders and protect the Filipino people from illicit and prohibited goods,” the BOC official added.
The operation was conducted in coordination with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Law Enforcement Department, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, representatives from the Department of Justice, barangay officials, SBYC officials and other members of the composite enforcement team.
The seized substance was immediately turned over to the PDEA for proper disposition and appropriate legal proceedings in accordance with existing laws, rules, and regulations.
At about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, joint operatives boarded and inspected the vessel, leading to the discovery and securing of the contraband.
The items were brought to the Subic Bay Yacht Club boathouse for inventory.
On Thursday, PCG personnel provided security escorts during the transport and turnover of the confiscated items to the PDEA for proper disposition and further investigation. (With a report from Raymond dela Cruz/PNA)
