WWII tunnels in Gibraltar are being turned into a massive wine cellar

(Relaxnews) – In Gibraltar, at the southern point of the Iberian Peninsula, over 50km of tunnels are being transformed into a gigantic wine cellar.

The Rock of Gibraltar is a tourist attraction on the coast of the Iberian Peninsula with peaks of over 400m above sea level. The area attracts many visitors curious to discover this British enclave steeped in history. Just before the start of the Second World War, British engineers dug over 50km (32 miles) of tunnels into the rock. After the war came to an end, the underground passages were left abandoned for several decades.

A company called Gibraltar Wine Vaults and the local authorities have now taken the matter in hand. Scientific studies were undertaken, revealing that humidity is 70-80%. The temperature is 13-14°C, which is ideal for storing wine, which needs time to reach its full potential.

A budget of £6m (around €8m) has thus been allocated to repair the Gibraltar tunnels. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2017. The local government hopes to attract investors who would feel secure storing their finest vintages in this unusual place. The authorities project that wines worth £60m (over €80m) could be stored there.
