(Relaxnews) – Disney’s new live-action adaptation of “Sleeping Beauty” lived up to the studio’s expectations during its opening weekend, grossing $170.6 million and claiming the top spot at the worldwide box office, according to Rentrak.
“Maleficent” overtook “X-Men: Days of Future Past” ($128.2 million) at the box office for the weekend that ended June 1. In spite of its fall into second place, Bryan Singer’s blockbuster became the most successful feature in the “X-Men” franchise with $500 million in revenues to date.
The two movies of the moment have a wide lead ahead of the competition, including Seth MacFarlane’s “A Million Ways to Die in the West.” The new comedy, which features Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried, earned $27.4 million during its opening weekend, taking third place at the global box office.
The sci-fi genre made a showing in fourth and fifth place through “Godzilla” ($27.2 million) and “Edge of Tomorrow” ($20 million). The latter feature, starring Tom Cruise, opened in 28 territories last week ahead of its US release on June 6.
