(LOS ANGELES-Relaxnews) – A new production video from director Peter Jackson for The Hobbit films was released March 1 with behind-the-scenes footage from various locations across New Zealand and highlights of the massive production.
In the first video blog of 2012, Jackson explains he can’t show any real scenes since some of the footage is from part two, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, due in theaters in 2013, as well as The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey (part one).
Like a travelog, the 12-minute vlog shows the journey of the cast and crew across the countryside and parks, including Mt. Ruapehu’s Turoa ski field, Strath Taieri in Central Otago and its great cloud formations and the Earnslaw Burn in picturesque Queenstown.
The actors, including Martin Freeman, the elusive Bilbo Baggins, are seen in costume and interviewed.
There’s a sense of the epic magnitude of the film and the production is evident with elevated ramps up a hillside to avoid disturbing the vegetation, and logistics such as the three satellite dishes that provide wireless communication.
Andy Serkis, the actor who played Caesar, the lead ape in last summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Gollum in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, is also the film’s second unit director on the film and is seen moving via helicopter to shoot remote locations.
The vlog comes on day 127, half-way through the shooting schedule of both Hobbit films.
The films co-star Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Martin Freeman, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Billy Connolly, Christopher Lee, Luke Evans and Andy Serkis.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic tale follows Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, as he journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. The journey takes them into the treacherous lands swarming with Goblins, Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 3D will hit theaters on December 12-14 worldwide. The Hobbit: There and Back Again will follow on December 2013.
