MANILA – University of the Philippines (UP) demolished Ateneo de Manila University, 5-0, to remain unbeaten after three outings in the UAAP Season 88 women’s tennis tournament at Colegio San Agustin hardcourt in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan on Sunday.

Maria Divinagracia survived Althea Ong, 6-1, 7-6(3); Jufe Cocoy won over Angela Buyante, 6-1, 6-1, and Paula Uy pulled off a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Judy Padilla in the singles.

In the doubles, Joshea Malazarte and Glydel Guevarra clobbered Chelsea Roque and Althea Martirez, 6-0, 6-0, while Marielle Jarata and Sydney Enriquez also blanked Zaina Omar and Eloh Castolo, 6-0, 6-0.

Meanwhile, defending champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) overpowered National University (NU), 4-1, 

Minette Bentillo and Justine Hannah Maneja outplayed Kolin Cornell and Juliana Carvajal, 6-3, 7-5, in the second doubles match to clinch the win for UST, which joined idle De La Salle University in second place at 2-1.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Kaye Ann Emana downed JM Carcueva, 6-4, 6-2, in the first singles but NU tied after Elsie Abarquez prevailed over Mica Emana, 6-2, 6-4.

Kaye Mustaza defeated AJ Acabo, 6-1, 6-3, while Judy Padilla and Princess Dela Rita outlasted Rovie Baulete and Adeline Abadia, 6-4, 4-6, 10-2.

NU slid to fourth place with a 1-2 record.

“Our motivation is no matter what happens, win or lose, do your best. A mistake is a mistake, so just play your game,” Maneja said.

In the men’s division, University of the East trounced Adamson University, 4-1, and University of the Philippines whipped La Salle, 5-0, to remain perfect in four starts.

Defending champion NU defeated UST, 3-2, to break their tie and rise to 3-1. (PNA)
