MANILA – The United Nations recognized the Philippines’ continuing push to strengthen multilateralism during a meeting between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.
The two top diplomats met bilaterally on Sept. 21, at the start of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City.
“Our exchange highlighted key regional issues, notably Myanmar, alongside our shared commitment to executing the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) – UN Plan of Action 2026–2030,” Lazaro said on Tuesday.
“The Philippines continues to lead in advocating for a robust and responsive multilateral architecture for global peace and progress,” she added.
The UN said Guterres particularly “expressed appreciation for the Philippines’ constructive engagement with the United Nations and commitment to multilateralism.”
The UN is gathering world leaders in New York City for the UNGA High-Level Week until Sept. 25.
Under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” the UNGA seeks to promote stronger multilateral cooperation and response to growing uncertainties confronting the world as the international community enters the crucial final stretch to 2030.
In a pre-recorded video message at the opening of the High-Level Week, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. joined world leaders in renewing a call to action on the Sustainable Development Goals. (PNA)
