(Relaxnews) – The former Prime Minister of the UK Margaret Thatcher has died, causing discussion on Twitter on Monday, April 8.

Baroness Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s first, and to date only, female Prime Minister. A member of the UK’s Conservative Party, Thatcher held the post from 1975-1990.

Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister was polarizing, marked by her championing of free market economics. Known as the “Iron Lady,” Thatcher was also instrumental in the United Kingdom’s decision to sent military forces to the Falkland Islands. In November 1990 Thatcher lost her position as British Prime Minister, but in 1992 she took a seat in the House Of Lords, the upper British parliamentary house.

The polarizing nature of Margaret Thatcher’s period in power explains today’s Twitter trending topics: in third place, “#IronLady” refers to her nickname while fifth-placed “#nostatefuneral” is being used by people arguing the divisive former Prime Minister should not have her funeral paid for by the state.

Twitter users are also discussing the death of Spanish actress Sara Montiel. The highly respected singer and actress died on April 8 at the age of 85. Montiel first found international fame with the hit film “El Último Cuplé” in 1957.

Elsewhere on Twitter microbloggers are talking about One Direction member Louis Tomlinson and his singing abilities under second-place trending topic “#LouisTomlinsonHasAperfectVoice.”
