MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is finalizing security preparations for the traditional Simbang Gabi (dawn Masses), set to begin Dec. 16.

In a statement on Sunday, PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil directed all police units to ensure public safety during the nine-day dawn masses the “Ligtas Paskuhan 2024” (Safe Christmas) campaign.

“Our priority is to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all devotees,” Marbil said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with local government units, church officials and other stakeholders.

He urged devotees to remain vigilant, secure belongings and report suspicious activities.

In Metro Manila, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is deploying additional personnel to boost visibility in malls, churches and public spaces.

Acting NCRPO director Brig. Gen. Anthony Aberin said district directors would actively supervise field deployments.

“Senior officials will oversee deployments to ensure public safety and the welfare of officers on duty,” Aberin said

He added that simulation exercises would be conducted to test officers’ proficiency in responding to emergencies and crimes.

Meanwhile, the Central Luzon Regional Police Office will deploy 100 motorcycle-riding cops trained in crime prevention and emergency response, according to its chief, Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan.

To ensure sufficient manpower, the PNP suspended vacation leaves starting Dec. 15, except for emergency cases.

“This ensures we have enough personnel deployed during the holiday season,” PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said.
