PNP: 2,794 drug suspects earlier released were rearrested

MANILA, Nov 7 (Mauhay)– The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday said a total of 2,794 drug suspects who were previously released have been rearrested for being repeat offenders.

They were among the 19,947 drug suspects earlier released in the past four years through plea bargaining agreement.

The PNP also said 244 drug suspects previously released through plea bargaining agreement were nabbed for alleged involvement in criminal activities.

PNP spokespserson Police Colonel Ysmael Yu said 66 of the repeat offenders appealed anew to avail of the plea bargaining agreement, based on data from the Crime Information Reporting and Analysis System (CIRAS) of the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM).

Yu said they have provided the judiciary and prosecution services the repeat offenders’ records for reference in further actions.

Data from PNP CIRAS show that 329,171 drug suspects were arrested from July 1, 2016 to October 15, 2020 by the anti-drug operating teams of the PNP and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Of this number, 101,058 were nabbed in Metro Manila; 73,458 in Calabarzon; and 41,755 in Central Luzon.

During the same period, CIRAS data showed 38,867 drug suspects were arrested in Central Visayas; 11,331 in Northern Mindanao; and 10,040 in Western Visayas. (MNS)
