MANILA – The Philippine Army (PA) on Wednesday said troops from its 18th Scout Ranger Company and their US counterparts successfully conducted a joint air assault training exercise at the Cagayan North International Airport, as part of the ongoing “Salaknib” Phase 2 exercises between the two services.
“The drill focused on enhancing joint operational capabilities and rapid airfield security response. Utilizing CH-47 and ‘Black Hawk’ helicopters, both forces conducted mission planning, detailed rehearsals, and airfield security at the Calayan Airstrip,” Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said in a statement.
He said the May 22 operation tested real-time coordination, swift troop deployment, and airfield security protocols.
This resulted in a successful and seamless security exercise, the PA chief added.
Dema-ala said the training underscores the PA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international defense partnerships and improve its capacity to respond to complex security challenges.
“It is aligned with the Army’s transformation toward a ‘Matatag na Hukbong Katihan, Sandigan ng Bagong Pilipinas’—a resilient and reliable land force that supports a stronger and more secure nation,” he added.
“Salaknib”, which means “shield” in Ilocano, reflects the historical bond between the two nations dating back to World War II, when Filipino and American troops fought side by side to defend freedom and democracy.
“Salaknib” Phase 1 took place from March 24 to April 11 and is the 10th iteration of the annual military maneuvers between Filipino and American troops.
Meanwhile, “Salaknib” Phase 2 is scheduled from May 19 to July 20. (PNA)
