MANILA – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued a man who fell overboard at Lucena Port in Quezon on Sunday.

In a news release Monday, the PCG said the Coast Guard Sub-Station-Lucena search and rescue team, in coordination with the Sea Marshal Unit of Southern Tagalog, responded to the incident upon receiving the report from the duty operations officer of Starhorse Shipping Lines.

The team brought back the man, who was not named, to the pier and assessed his condition.

According to the victim’s family, the 50-year-old resident of Poblacion, Milagros, Masbate, was traveling with his niece aboard MV Virgen De Peñafrancia XII.

The vessel departed from Bapor, Masbate Port, on Feb. 1 and arrived at Lucena Port the next day.

While preparing to disembark, the victim unexpectedly left his designated area and jumped overboard from the starboard side of the vessel’s ramp.

His niece later revealed that he had a pre-existing mental or psychological condition.

The victim’s son arrived at the Philippine Ports Authority Port Police to take custody of his father.

He was taken to the Quezon Medical Center for further medical evaluation.

The PCG has advised the shipping line to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly during passenger disembarkation. (PNA)
