MANILA – The Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) operatives seized PHP41.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes under “Oplan Mega Shopper” from May 1 to 4.

In a statement on Wednesday, CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the intensified operation against economic sabotage and illicit trade of commercial products across the country has also resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals.

Torre said the biggest haul was recorded on May 2, when the operatives confiscated counterfeit cigarettes and substandard brands, totaling PHP34.3 million, in two separate operations in Tondo, and Davao del Sur.

Other “Oplan Mega Shopper” raids were conducted in Bataan on May 1 and Saranggani on May 4.

He noted that the government protects and promotes the people’s right to health and instills health consciousness among them, and shields consumers from trade malpractices and substandard tobacco products.

He commended the CIDG operatives “for this remarkable accomplishment.”

“Rest assured that your CIDG is relentless in its fight against all illegal trade of consumer products, including cigarettes. We urge the public to just report all crimes and any suspicious activities in your communities, and your CIDG will do the rest,” Torre said. (PNA)
