MANILA – The National Security Council (NSC) described the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan, which was recently ratified by the Senate, as a “cornerstone” of the evolving security environment.
“The NSC views this agreement as a cornerstone of the evolving security architecture in the region. Japan’s growing role as a trusted partner aligns seamlessly with our vision of creating a network of cooperation with like-minded allies,” the NSC said in a statement Tuesday.
It added the RAA represents a shift -from rhetoric to action- where joint undertakings will translate into strengthened security outcomes, better maritime awareness, and enduring regional peace.
It also called the RAA a groundbreaking development that bridges “our nations’ commitment to a more resilient and secure Indo-Pacific Region.”
“In an era of shared challenges, this agreement is more than a partnership; it is a clear statement of intent to safeguard our national interests while fostering trust between two nations who stand for regional stability and peace,” the NSC said.
It said the RAA is not just about interoperability, it is about building a deeper bond of readiness and cooperation.
“This agreement opens doors to opportunities for joint trainings, strategic exchanges, and enhanced military engagements -crucial elements in strengthening our defense posture and increasing our preparedness in a fast-changing geopolitical landscape,” the NSC said.
For the Philippines, the RAA signals a step forward in enhancing its capabilities as a responsible stakeholder in the Indo-Pacific Region.
“We recognize the hard work of the Senate led by Senate President Francis Escudero and Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Chairman Imee Marcos in ensuring that this agreement aligns with the Philippines’ strategic priorities,” it added.
As the Japanese National Diet takes the next step, the NSC hopes that the RAA will open a new chapter in defense collaboration between Manila and Tokyo that is reflective of the growing confidence and shared responsibilities between the two nations. (PNA)
