MGCQ status for Metro Manila in November not impossible — Palace

MANILA, Oct 1 (Mabuhay) — Malacañang is not ruling out the possibility that Metro Manila may shift to a modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) in November.

“It is not an impossibility dahil talaga naman po napababa natin [ang COVID-19 cases] pero nasa kababayan pa rin natin ‘yan sa Metro Manila. Alam na po natin ang dapat gawin: mask, hugas, iwas,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said at a press conference in Bataan.

Roque issued the statement after Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez, chairperson of the Metro Manila Council, said on Wednesday that the National Capital Region’s quarantine status may be downgraded to MGCQ next month if COVID-19 cases continue to decline and the public will observe the minimum health protocols.

MGCQ is the least restrictive in the government’s four-tier quarantine classification system, meaning more businesses will be allowed to operate but public health measures such as wearing of masks and social distancing will remain in effect.

Metro Manila will be under general community quarantine (GCQ) until October 31.

The Philippines’ COVID-19 tally rose to 311,694 on Wednesday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 2,426 new infections.

The bulk of the newly reported cases were still recorded in Metro Manila with 887, followed by Cavite with 201, Rizal with 147, Negros Occidental with 115, and Batangas with 99.(MNS)
