He’s been known as The Concert King for decades now and he looks far from relinquishing the title.

Martin Nievera can still fill big venues here and abroad. In fact, even with little promotions at times, his concerts are still almost always sold out.

In an interview, the singer downplayed his ability to command huge ticket sales. He credits social media for making it easier to reach out to fans.

“With today’s social networking sites, it’s easier na to promote concerts. You just need to post it and many people would be able to read it,” he shared.

He added there are others who could also fill up huge venues like the Mall of Asia Arena and the Araneta Coliseum. “They are definitely also worthy of the title,” he said.

So what makes him king, we asked.

Martin shared, “I make people feel like they are royalty. That, in my concert, they are the star of the night, not me.”

There is no dearth in Valentine’s Day concerts in and around the city, and for an artist like Martin, this time of the year is one of the busiest.

For Valentine’s, most concert repertoires consist of love songs. Martin’s shows are no different but not by choice. He shared that even when they suggest different songs, producers and the fans still want to hear them sing tried and tested numbers.

“Beforehand, lahat ng production binibigyan namin ng advice na baka pwedeng ganito ganyan. But they don’t want it. Ang reason nila, which to me is very sound naman, is that sa Valentine’s kasi everybody wants to swoon, fall in love and reminisce and to hold hands – even with strangers, so that’s how it is,” he explained.

Ever the maverick, however, Martin maintained he is going to do some unusual stuff in his upcoming Valentine’s show billed “Royals,” with Erik Santos, Angeline Quinto and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid.

“We are not simply going to do the obvious,” Martin said. “Regine and I will try a couple of new tunes, maybe a little rap… you’ll see.”

Presented by Starmedia Entertainment and I-Music, “Royals” will be held on Feb. 13, 8 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Arena, and on Feb. 14, 8 p.m. at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino, CebuCity. (MNS)
