MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. congratulated on Wednesday Donald Trump, who is poised to win his second term as President of the United States (US).
“President Trump has won, and the American people triumphed, and I congratulate them for their victory in an exercise which showed the world the strength of American values,” Marcos said in a statement.
Trump, who served as US president from 2017-2021, currently leads US vice president Kamala Harris and is projected to win a fresh mandate from the Americans in the 2024 elections.
Marcos said he looks forward to working with Trump “on a wide range of issues that will yield mutual benefits to two nations with deep ties, shared beliefs, common vision, and a long history of working together.”
The US has been the Philippines’ longstanding military ally.
“I am hopeful that this unshakeable alliance, tested in war and peace, will be a force of good that will blaze a path of prosperity and amity in the region, and in both sides of the Pacific,” the President said.
He said the Philippines is fully committed to its “durable partnership” with the US “because it is founded on the ideals we share: freedom and democracy.”
“I have personally met President Trump as a young man so I know that his robust leadership will result in a better future for all of us,” the President added. (PNA)
