MANILA – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil on Friday ordered the Cagayan police to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of reelectionist Mayor Joel Ruma of Rizal town.

Marbil issued the directive when he visited the wake of Ruma.

The PNP chief then proceeded to Barangay Illuru Sur where Ruma was shot dead by a still unidentified assailant during a campaign sortie on April 23.

Marbil also met the members of the Rizal Police Station, encouraging them to be diligent in resolving the death of Ruma and to ensure the public of a peaceful May 12 elections.

“Our people’s safety is our responsibility, and they feel more secure when they see us on the streets, especially in areas with high tensions during election season. This is why we are ramping up our police visibility to ensure peace and order,” Marbil said.

Marbil attended the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) conference meeting, where operatives gave updates on the investigation.

He said the SITG, formed by the Police Regional Office 2 (Cagayan Valley), is carefully examining evidence, including closed-circuit television, to pin down the mastermind.

“We are dedicated to ensuring justice is served for Mayor Ruma, the two other (injured) victims and the residents of Rizal, Cagayan,” he said.

Marbil’s visit underscored the PNP’s role in pursuing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directives to create a safer and more unified nation.

“The Bagong Pilipinas initiative emphasizes transparency, justice and peace, and the PNP is steadfast in its commitment to these goals,” Marbil said. (PNA)
