MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Thursday suspended the license of a public utility vehicle (PUV) driver involved in a road crash in Tacloban City that took the lives of two passengers and caused several injuries.
In a statement, LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, said a show cause order (SCO) was issued by LTO 8 (Eastern Visayas) Director Ledwino Macariola against the driver in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to run after erring motorists.
The driver was slapped with a 90-day preventive suspension on his driver’s license and was asked to explain why it should not be revoked for reckless driving and being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.
According to an LTO investigation, the incident happened at Airport Road in Barangay San Jose, Tacloban City when his PUV crashed into a lamp post at the center island of the road.
Two passengers were killed while several other passengers were injured. Instead of rendering assistance, the driver fled.
Macariola said the driver’s decision to flee is punishable under Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.
“In this regard, (you are) hereby ordered to show cause in writing, within 10 days from your receipt of this order, why your driver’s license should not be cancelled, or revoked, and/or why appropriate fines and penalties should not be imposed upon you, for your vicarious liability arising from the acts,” the SCO read.
