Jenny Craig Brand Ambassador Valerie Bertinelli to lead 5K walk aimed at raising awareness and funds to fight heart disease and stroke
LOS ANGELES – The American Heart Association (AHA) invites the community to the Los Angeles County Heart Walk on Sept. 29, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Heart Walk is an annual tradition that brings the community together to raise awareness and critical funds to fight heart disease and stroke – the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers.
Special guest and Jenny Craig Brand Ambassador Valerie Bertinelli will kick off the event. The “Hot in Cleveland” star, who will be walking with Team Jenny, will also present the AHA’s Lifestyle Change Awards, which recognize individuals who have made positive changes to improve their health. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases claim more than 831,000 lives every year. In Los Angeles, more than 16,000 men, women and children die of these diseases each year. While heart disease and stroke mortality dropped significantly between 1997 and 2007, heart disease deaths remain 12 percent higher in LA County than the U.S. as a whole.
The AHA’s mission is building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and its goal by 2020 is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.
It takes a community to achieve this goal and change the future of heart health in Los Angeles. Anyone can make a difference and help hearts in need by forming a Heart Walk team with family, friends or coworkers. The $1.5 million that the Los Angeles Heart Walk hopes to raise will benefit the American Heart Association’s cardiovascular research efforts, community education outreach and other mission-related work.
The day’s activities will include a non-competitive 5K walk/run, a fun and interactive Kids Zone, free blood pressure screening, CPR demonstrations, live entertainment and giveaways. Registration is free, and walkers who raise $100 or more will receive a souvenir Heart Walk t-shirt.
