MANILA – Far Eastern University clobbered Adamson University, 3.5-.5, Wednesday to take the No. 1 seed in the UAAP Season 87 women’s blitz semifinal.

The Lady Tamaraws finished with 46 match points or eight points after the elimination round at the Adamson gym to boost their campaign for a third straight title.

Franchesca Largo, Mhage Sebastian and Me Ann Joy Baclayon won their matches while Samantha Umayan settled for a draw with Angela San Luis.

De La Salle, bannered by Francois Magpily, secured the No. 2 seed.

Ateneo de Manila and University of Santo Tomas ranked third and fourth, respectively, with 37 points each.

Meanwhile, FEU-Diliman and National University Nazareth School will battle in the girls’ division final.

FEU-D and UST both teams finished with seven match points to arrange a championship showdown in the boys’ division.

FEU bagged three of four gold medals in the standard event last year and two of four in the rapid event last week.

FEU coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales hopes the rapid and blitz events, both demonstration sports this season, will become regular events in the future.

“That’s our hope, to promote chess and add more scholarships to young chess players who also want an education,” said Gonzales, who also serves as chief executive officer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. (PNA)
