Helena Bonham Carter backing ‘Saint Mazie’ adaptation
Box office assistant Mazie Gordon-Phillips is to get her own miniseries as Helena Bonham Carter produces and stars in a film adapting “Saint Mazie,” based on the real-life heroine to New York’s homeless.
“Mazie is a restless, independent woman who embodies the essence of 1930s New York,” fellow producer Faye Ward told Deadline.
“Our story unveils a woman in the middle of her life, a local legend who lifted the spirit of a community and yet barely moved beyond the perimeter of two square miles.”
Jami Attenberg’s novel was inspired by her reading of a 1940 New Yorker article on Mazie-Gordon Phillips, and Bonham Carter together with Ward are teaming up again after “Suffragette.”
