(Relaxnews) – The influential cult classic anime is looking for a lead actress in its bid to finally become a live action film.
Australian actress Margot Robbie was praised for her turn as Naomi Lapaglia in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and is now in talks to become cyborg counterterrorist Major Kusanagi in “Ghost in the Shell,” according toDeadline.
“Ghost in the Shell” first debuted as a comic book series in 1989 before the original 1995 film, the first of six animated ventures.
Hard-boiled cyborg Motoko Kusanagi heads up a Japanese counterterrorist and cybercrime division, and the exploits of the Major, her team, and supervisors, lend themselves well to high-octane action sequences and an exploration of philosophical themes — no wonder it was frequently cited as an influence on “The Matrix.”
Already attached to the current effort transforming “Ghost in the Shell” into a viable Hollywood production is Rupert Sanders, the director of “Snow White and the Huntsman,” working from a script written by William Wheeler of “The Hoax” and “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.”
