eMotion (Ethnic Motion) is a Hip hop dance competition taking place at the U.S. Philippines Expo 2012.

Group dancers or dance crews are invited to showcase their creativity, talent, technique and uniqueness for a chance to win a cash prize of $3,000 and media exposure.  The winners will be invited to perform as special guests on Showtime!

One of the most popular forms of dance, Hip hop is a fusion of African-American and Latin-American sub-cultures which originated from the East Coast, characterized by street style and rhythmic interpretations that capture the look, attitude, music and elements of the urban and suburban environment that makes it uniquely Hip hop.

So what is the Filipino take on hip hop?

eMotion promises to deliver an unparalleled experience to both participants and spectators in its effort to build its reputation as the Filipino authority on Urban Dance and lifestyle.  It allows choreographers and dancers to grow, experiment and earn recognition for their hard work.  eMotion encourages the fusing together of free-standing styles that involve multiple formats of Urban Dance, such as Break Dancing, Krumping, Housing and many other variations that may complement their Hip-hop moves.

“As with other artistic expressions and disciplines, Hip hop is continuously transforming and redefining itself with each generation of dancers,” said U.S.-Philippine Expo founder and C.E.O., Mr. Ruben Panopio Jr. as he anticipates each performance from local talents.  “I look forward to what this year’s contestants will bring to the show,” he added.

“Group dancers, participants and hundreds of spectators will partake in a festive exhibition, musicality and fair competition.  Awarding the event’s top dancers’ with the most prestigious acknowledgements is a good indication of how the Filipino community is overflowing with talent.”

Criteria for Judging:

The showmanship, choreography and originality of each group will determine the winners.  The highest scoring Hip hop dance routine must contain the following formula:

  1. A variety of street dance styles
  2. Original signature moves
  3. Engaging music
  4. Continuous and uninterrupted choreography
  5. Complete body (head-to-toe) Hip hop dance moves

Qualifying Requirements:

  1. A group must consist of a minimum of 5 members.
  2. All group members must be between 15 to 30 years old.
  3. A group may be made up of all males, females, or any combination of both.
  4. At least 2 members of the group must be of Filipino descent.

All group members are required to complete a registration form and turn in a registration fee of $20 per member via money order or cashier’s check.  All documents must be turned-in at Cherry’s Salon by July 20, 2012.

While artistic freedom is always encouraged, each dance routine must be consistent with family entertainment – which is what the entire festival is all about.  This contest is part of a 2-day entertainment line-up from August 4-5, 2012 at the Fairplex Building 4 in Pomona, California.

The U.S.-Philippine Expo 2012 is expected to be the “best ever” since its first festival in 1993.  This year’s roster of events include: a Grand Raffle Draw (the first prize is a brand new Nissan Sentra 2012!); a 3-mile walk hosted by City of Pomona Mayor Elliott Rothman, benefiting the Beautiful Day Foundation; the Miss U.S.-Philippines Expo Beauty Pageant; over 100 exhibitor booths; The Show of Shows; a World War II memorabilia exhibit; Filipino food, games and festivities; and the International Speed Meet exhibit which will feature an extensive collection of exotic cars from around the world.
