LOS ANGELES – Filipino-American artists and journalists have joined forces to support the campaign to stop the killings of journalists in the Philippines.

To help fund a memorial event and traveling photo exhibit marking the 5th anniversary of the Ampatuan Massacre, the Fil-Am artists will hold an art exhibit, titled “Peace on Earth: Visions of Love, Joy and Tranquility.”

“We’re saying no to violence and yes to justice, peace and love,” said Fil-Am artist Mat Relox, who is best known for capturing the exotic and distinct lifestyle of his people—the peace-loving Mangyan tribe in Mindoro, Philippines.

Relox and the other artists – Erben Detablan, Rafael Maniago, Vics Magsaysay, Therese Sabino, Bienvenido “Boi” Sibug and Greg Villaflor – will display their artworks at the La Habra Art Gallery in La Habra, California, from Nov. 15 to Jan. 3. Part of the proceeds from the Fil-Am exhibit will support the campaign of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP)-US Chapter to stop the killings of journalists and to end impunity in the Philippines.

“This is our way of supporting justice and press freedom in the Philippines,” said Maniago, whose paintings adorn educational and government institutions in the Philippines. “Our works portray our vision for the homeland – genuine peace and freedom, love and harmony.”

The three-month exhibit is curated by La Habra artist Luz Spanks, and the Fil-Am section is co-curated by journalist Nimfa Rueda. The exhibit will also feature the works of local artists, as well as Asian-American artists Dieu Phan and Kathy Guan.

The public is invited to the exhibit’s opening reception at La Habra Art Gallery on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Special guests include the first Fil-Am to win an Emmy, Jess Espanola, who received the prestigious award for his work as assistant animation director for The Simpsons.

The NUJP-US will launch its campaign at the public event, “A Day of Remembrance – 5th Anniversary of the Ampatuan Massacre” at the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA) in Los Angeles on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.

The program will include a candlelight ceremony and musical performances by members of the media, including Balita Media executive editor Rhony Laigo.

The traveling photo exhibit is co-curated by photojournalists Nick Sagmit, Benny Uy and Joe Cobilla. It will be coordinated by journalist Larry Pelayo and publisher Felix Lapuz.
