MANILA (Mabuhay) – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is running for president in 2016, his political adviser said Saturday.

“Yes,” Lito Banayo, political adviser of Duterte, said when asked if the mayor will join the presidential race in 2016.

Banayo said that there was still no definite date when the mayor will formally announce his presidential run.

On Friday, Duterte told reporters in Davao City that he will wait for October 15 before declaring whether he would go for the presidency.

The filing of certificates of candidacy at the Commission on Elections office in Manila will run from October 12 to October 16.

Duterte had repeatedly said that he will not run for president, but said that he would need time for “soul-searching” after thousands of supporters showed up at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park last September.

Asked who will be Duterte’s running mate, Banayo said: “No final choice for VP (vice president) yet.”

In late September, reports of a possible teamup between Duterte and Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano came up after the lawmaker declared his vice presidential run in Davao City.

After the declaration, Cayetano and Duterte met in a dinner. Cayetano’s camp had said that another meeting between the two official has been set in Manila.

There are also reports that Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. may be Duterte’s running mate.

Meanwhile, Banayo said that they have come up with a partial list of possible senatorial candidates.

The senatorial candidates include:

Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao

Former senator Panfilo Lacson

Sen. Sergio Osmeña III

Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno

former senator Miguel Zubiri

Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez

Former police official and ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Samuel Pagdilao

Banayo said the names were “initially agreed” during a meeting with Duterte in Davao City last Wednesday night. (MNS)
