MANILA, Nov 20 (Mabuhay) — Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario finally secured the approval of the Commission Appointments (CA) on Thursday after appearing four times before the bicameral body since September.

“I believe that we can expect great things in the housing sector from the department under his helm,” Senator Francis Tolentino said as he recommended the confirmation of Del Rosario’s appointment.

Del Rosario’s appointment as DHSUD chief has been met with a mix of opposition and support from Maranaos, who have been monitoring the rehabilitation of war-torn Marawi City under Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM), an ad hoc inter-agency body that he also heads.

Earlier in the day’s hearing, Del Rosario said only P10.7 billion of the estimated P350 billion international pledges for Marawi assistance was coursed through the national government.

As a former executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Del Rosario denied that the death toll due to Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 had been downgraded at 6,300.

The DHSUD is expected to ensure the resettlement of displaced disaster victims in the country after a series of typhoons battered several provinces in the past weeks. The Secretary told the CA that said the agency is now coordinating with the local government units.

Del Rosario was a retired Major General in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and was a member of the Philippine Military Academy’s 1980 Class Mapitagan.

Prior to being appointed chief of the newly created DHSUD last January, he was the chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council.  (MNS)
