(Relaxnews) – The Duchess of Cambridge has been tapped to baptize a new cruise ship which will set sail this summer featuring a glass-bottomed walkway that will extend beyond the edge of the ship.

Princess Cruises has announced that in the British ship-naming tradition, Kate Middleton, as the ship’s ‘godmother,’ will christen the latest addition to its fleet, the Royal Princess, a 3,600-passenger liner which will set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton in June.

At a special gala event June 12, the duchess will name the new ship against the pomp and circumstance of the Royal Marines Band and pipers of the Irish Guards.

Some of the ship’s main features include the SeaWalk, a cantilevered, glass-bottomed walkway extending beyond the ship’s edge for a view of the sea with an 8.5 m (28 feet) drop; a private poolside cabana that gives the illusion of floating on water; the largest pastry shop at sea; and balconies on all outside staterooms.

The ship will also boast the fleet’s largest top-deck pool, water and laser light shows, and a big screen for the cruise line’s popular outdoor ‘Movies Under the Stars’ event.

The Royal Princess sets off for her maiden voyage June 16 and will sail the Mediterranean in summer, and travel to the Eastern Caribbean in the fall.
