(Relaxnews) – China will surpass the US as the country with the most number of skyscrapers in five years’ time, according to a report in the Shanghai Daily Monday.

By 2017, China will have 802 skyscraper structures compared to 539 in the US, according to a recent ‘Supercity’ research report by China-based MotianCity, which conducts research on building structures. In 10 years’ time, skyscrapers on the mainland are expected to number 1,318, compared to 563 in the US.

The US currently has the world’s greatest number of skyscrapers at 533, compared with 470 in China, excluding Hong Kong.

At present, China has 332 skyscrapers under construction with another 516 planned for construction in the near future, including the 121-story Shanghai Tower to be completed by 2015, and the 118-story Ping An International Financial Center in Shenzhen, with construction expected to end by 2016.

Most of the future skyscraper constructions are expected to take place in major cities such as Shanghai and Beijing as well as the second and third-tier cities including Nanjing and Dongguan.

By contrast, the US currently has only six skyscrapers under construction and another 24 in the pipeline.

Currently, China’s tallest building is the 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center, which is 492 meters tall, while the tallest tower in the US is Chicago’s 108-story Willis Tower, which measures 422 meters. By contrast, the world’s tallest building is the 160-story Burj Khalifa, which stands at 828 meters tall.
