(Relaxnews) – There was a time when the options were limited when it came to lip color. But nowadays cosmetics makers, ever more creative, are constantly innovating to find ideal formulas and textures. Between glosses, balms and lipsticks, there is something for everyone.

One of the stars of the summer makeup kit, lip gloss has a fun and relaxed side that makes it more suited to the beach than the office. For the ultimate summer look, opt for a bright color that complements a summer tan, such as the Gloss Lèvres Scintillantes in “Sexy” (hot pink) from Chanel’s Reflets d’Été collection ($29.50).

And if you’re feeling festive, pick up a gloss with a touch of shimmer. Bourjois has just the thing with its Gloss Effet 3D, to be worn alone or as a top coat over your lipstick (Gloss Effet 3D, Bourjois, €13.55/around $19, available in six shades).

This is one makeup item many of us would never want to go without, even in the lazy days of summer. Luckily, makeup brands have thought of everything. For those looking for both the bright color of a lipstick and the shine of a gloss, Dolce & Gabbana has launched five new shades of its Passion Duo, a two-layered lipstick with a satin-finish core. Its moisturizing formula is just the thing for lips damaged by the summer sun (Passion Duo Gloss Fusion Lipstick, Dolce & Gabbana, $36, available in 20 shades).

For anyone who fears that their makeup might melt away in the heat this season, Too Faced offers a new lip color that is already in liquid form. Dubbed “Melted,” the liquified lipstick was inspired by vats of molten lipstick formula in the lab, which the brand’s creative director Jerrod Blandino noticed had more intense colors than any lipstick. The product promises to combine unparalleled shine and saturated color with a comfortable, long-lasting texture (Melted, Too Faced, $21, available in 10 shades).

Summer is also a time when it’s especially important to take care of your lips, which can easily become dried out by too much time in the sun or in the water. So lip balm is a must, and while you’re moisturizing, you might as well add a little color. The natural cosmetics brand Une offers its Breezy Lips balm, which contains shea butter and sunflower oil to plump up the lips and deliver long-lasting hydration (Breezy Lips, Une, from €17/around $23, available in four shades).

For those who like surprises, Sephora has launched its Color Adapt balm, which changes color according to the pH of your lips for a customized shade of pink. Aside from this novelty, the balm also offers moisturizing ingredients and a volume activating complex to plump up your pout (Color Adapt Lip Balm, Sephora, $13).

Finally, there is always the ever-popular solution of the Clinique Chubby Stick. Easy to apply and somewhere between sheer and opaque, this famous pencil-shaped lip balm is a godsend for women in a hurry.  What’s more, the Chubby Stick is full of ingredients that protect and nourish, including shea butter, mango butter, jojoba oil and antioxidants (Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Color Balm, Clinique, $17).

Why not take advantage of your summer vacation to try something entirely new? Makeup brands are constantly coming up with creative new ways to color your kisser.

Launched last spring, the Dior Addict Fluid Stick is one of those products every makeup enthusiast should try at least once. Between a gloss and a lipstick, the unique formula delivers both intense, long-lasting color and glossy shine, all with a bare lips feel. The secret: pigments are enclosed in tiny beads of gloss that are blended upon application. Another innovative aspect is that, unlike ordinary lip glosses, the Fluid Stick contains water instead of heavy wax. Once the product is applied, the water evaporates, leaving behind nothing but vibrant, long-lasting color (Dior Addict Fluid Stick, Dior, $35, available in 16 shades).

Yves Saint Laurent has also launched an interesting hybrid. Baby Doll Kiss and Blush, for lips and cheeks, stands out for its unique formula and unusual concept. Its whipped mousse texture delivers pigments with a sensual matte finish, while special oils and powders ensure the makeup stays in place. The patented applicator contains a flexible bead that adapts to the curves of lips and cheeks, while the pointed tip allows for a more precise application around the edges (Baby Doll Kiss and Blush, Yves Saint Laurent, $40, available in 12 shades).

Finally, Terry de Gunzburg offers a unique “tattoo finish” with his new Tint to Lip lip stain. The concentrated formula contains acerola extract to plump the lips and antioxidant-rich cherry extract to nourish them. The result is a colorful and healthy pout. Applied straight from the bottle, the stain has a delicate watercolor effect. When the product is shaken, the micro-prisms in the formula are activated to deliver a more festive, luminous color. (Tint to Lip Water Color Lipstain, by Terry, $36).
