(Relaxnews) – Hou Hsaio Hsien’s first martial arts film “The Assassin” goes into the Asian Film Awards with nine nominations, including ones for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.

Also favorably elevated by the selection process are Philip Yung’s crime thriller “Port of Call” (five nominations), Jia Zhangke drama “Mountains May Depart,” Guan Hu actioner “Mr. Six,” and Ryoo Seung-wan’s crime comedy “Veteran” (four nominations each).

Taiwan’s Foreign Language submission to this year’s Academy Awards, “The Assassin,” has already won over critics with big wins at Cannes and the Golden Horse awards.

It’s joined in the Asian Film Awards’ Best Film category by Chinese films “Mountains May Depart” and “Mr. Six,” Japan’s “Three Stories of Love,” India’s “Bajirao Mastani,” and South Korea’s “Veteran.”

The Best Director category is almost identical, with the “Bajirao Mastani” and “Three Stories..” helmers making way for Koreeda Hirokazu of “Our Little Sister.”

The Asian Film Awards are set to take place March 17 in Macau.
