With James Cameron’s movie set to celebrate its 30th birthday in a few days, San Diego Comic Con is the ideal opportunity to reunite the film’s director and cast at a reunion panel, July 23.

“Aliens” – the second movie in the “Alien” franchise following Ridley Scott’s 1979 film – turns 30 July 18. Twentieth Century Fox is marking the milestone by reuniting director James Cameron, producer Gale Anne Hurd and cast members to share their memories about the movie and its production with San Diego convention-goers. Sigourney Weaver, the movie’s lead star as Ellen Replay, will be on the panel, along with Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser and Carrie Henn.

The film’s 30th anniversary will also be celebrated this fall with a limited-edition Blu-ray set, up for US release September 13, including the movie’s commercially released cut and its director’s cut. The pack also includes a book of art from the Dark Horse Comics “Aliens” series and ten collectible postcards featuring sketches by James Cameron. A new box set of all the movies in the saga, including Ridley Scott‘s “Alien,” James Cameron’s “Aliens,” David Fincher’s “Alien 3” and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Alien: Resurrection,” is out October 5.

A new lease of life

With its reunion panel and Blu-ray releases, Twentieth Century Fox no doubt hopes to revive and publicize its hit franchise, like Disney with “Star Wars”.

“Aliens” hasn’t returned to the big screen since the last instalment from Jean-Pierre Jeunet landed in 1997, with the exception of Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” which draws heavily on the franchise. In fact, its characters – played by Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace – are to return in a direct sequel, “Alien: Covenant,” due out August 4, 2017.

A ‘real’ comeback is, however, also in the pipeline, although there’s no word yet on release dates. Sigourney Weaver will return in the role of Ellen Ripley, this time directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9,” “Elysium”). According to the actress’ first revelations, the South African director will pick up the story from the end of “Aliens,” skipping the third and fourth instalments altogether.
