LEGAZPI CITY – Mild to moderate eruptions were recorded at the summit crater of Mayon Volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported on Wednesday.

Phivolcs said the activity was recorded from 7:34 p.m. to 8:35 p.m. Tuesday with continuous lava effusion.

Lava effusion and flows have reached radial distances from the crater, as seen in three major gullies, with Basud reaching 3.8 kilometers (km), Bonga (1.6 km), and Mi-isi (1.3 km).

Mayon Volcano generated eight volcanic earthquakes, 497 rockfalls and 50 pyroclastic density current signals or ‘uson’.

Within the 24-hour monitoring period, the volcano emitted 3,217 tonnes of sulfur dioxide.

The plumes have moderate emissions that drift west-northwest, northwest and west-southwest.

The effusive eruption of Mayon Volcano has continued for 43 consecutive days.

Alert Level 3 prevails over Mayon, and entry into the 6-km Permanent Danger Zone is still prohibited.

Meanwhile, the Camalig Bureau of Fire Protection conducted water flushing and road-clearing operations to ensure the safety of motorists and residents from ashfall.

Roderick Mendoza of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office said that, given prevailing wind patterns (typically drifting west-southwest and west-northwest), potential ashfall is most likely to affect the towns of Guinobatan and Camalig, as well as Ligao City. (PNA)
