MANILA – The index crimes dropped by 60.18 percent in Metro Manila during the Holy Week from April 14 to 20, compared to the same period in 2024, according to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Monday.
NCRPO chief, Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin, said that 45 focus crimes were lower than the 113 incidents logged in the same period last year.
The NCRPO data showed that the most substantial decline was in murder, with only one case, down from eight incidents in 2024.
It also said rape has a sharp 77.78 percent drop (18 cases down to 4); physical injuries — 66.67 percent (12 cases down to 4); theft — 56.36 percent (55 cases down to 24); and carnapping — 75 percent decline (from 4 to 1).
The NCRPO also significantly improved in the case solution with 88.89 percent efficiency from last year’s 73.45 percent.
“NCRPO is just fulfilling our mandate of peace and security. We owe this to the public and we are duty-bound to serve and protect, with competence and integrity,” Aberin said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the observance of Semana Santa 2025 nationwide was generally peaceful, with no major untoward incidents disrupting the week-long religious tradition.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil attributed the success to the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies, local government units, and the cooperation of the public, all working in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directives to ensure a safe and solemn Lenten season observance.
The PNP recorded 64 cases of drowning, 15 fire incidents, 14 vehicular accidents, three cases of acts of lasciviousness, two cases of alarm and scandal, one theft, and one robbery from April 13 to 21.
The PNP also reported a notable 55.56 percent reduction in focus crimes nationwide during Holy Week.
Marbil thanked all police personnel who remained on duty during the Holy Week.
“While the rest of the nation was on break, you were on duty. Because of your vigilance and presence, the entire observance of Holy Week was generally peaceful, with no major incidents recorded. That is a true testament to your commitment, professionalism, and sense of duty,” Marbil said in his message during the flag raising ceremony on Monday. (PNA)
