1,392 new cases bring Philippines’ COVID-19 tally to 58,850

MANILA, July 16 (Mabuhay)– The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rose to 58,850 on Wednesday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 1,392 more infections—512 “fresh” or newly validated and 880 reported late.

The five provinces with the highest number of new cases were Metro Manila with 708, Cebu with 198, Iloilo with 86, Laguna with 64, and Cavite with 46.

Total recoveries also rose to 20,976 after 517 more patients recovered from the respiratory illness, while the death toll climbed to 1,614 with 11 new fatalities.

There are also 36,260 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 90.6 percent of which are mild, 8.6 percent are asymptomatic, 0.4 percent are severe, and 0.5 percent are in critical condition.

The DOH said figures reported on Wednesday were based on data submitted by 73 out of the 82 operational laboratories.

The department also removed 87 duplicate cases from the total tally of infections

Meanwhile, a total of 43 Filipinos contracted the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) abroad, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Wednesday, bringing the overall tally to 8,915.

The DFA said most of the cases remain concentrated in the Middle East/Africa region with 6,431 infections, followed by Europe with 1,063, Asia and the Pacific with 722, and the Americas with 699.

In its latest bulletin, the DFA said the total recoveries also rose to 5,311 after 34 more were reported in the Asia Pacific and Europe as of July 15.

Meanwhile, the death toll stands at 618, with zero new deaths recorded for three consecutive days.

“As we celebrate World Youth Skills Day today, the DFA commits to not only monitoring the status of our people abroad but also in continuing its efforts to promote their welfare and development, including the youth, during and beyond this current crisis we are in,” it said. (MNS)
